7 Months Old!

At Seven Months old Kye can do all of the things that What to Expect the First Year says he “should” be able to do including:

  • feed self a cracker (post to come!)

  • razz

  • ooo or babble when happy (grunting totally counts haha)

  • smile often when interacting with you

He can do most of the things that a seven month old “will probably, may possibly, or even may” be able to do including:

  • sit without support

  • bear some weight on legs when held upright

  • object if you try to take a toy away

  • work to get a toy that’s out of reach

  • look for dropped object

  • rake with fingers an object and pick it up in fist

  • turn in direction of a voice

  • babble, combining vowels and consonants such as ga-ga-ga, ba-ba-ba, ma-ma-ma, da-da-da (he only ever does this when he has a toy in his mouth..kinda strange!)

  • play peekaboo

  • pass a cube or other object from one hand to the other

  • stand holding on to someone or something

  • pull up to a standing position from sitting (especially in the bathtub!)

Things Kye can’t quite do include:

  • creep or crawl (but what is creeping? it may be what he’s doing? not sure on this one)

  • get into sitting position from stomach

  • play patty-cake (clap hands) or wave bye-bye (is it bad that my child is afraid of clapping?)

  • pick up tiny objects with any part of thumb and finger

  • walk holding on to furniture (cruise)

  • say “mama” or “dada” indiscriminately

It looks like he’s pretty much on target, but what is funny is that the things he’s not quite there yet on are mostly motor skills. I’ve read that boys develop slower than girls in all areas (no surprise there! I dunno if they ever catch up to us haha!) so I know I can’t compare (not that you should anyway) where he’s at to other people I know since everyone I’m friends with that has little babies has girls! I’m excited for crawling but not overly pumped about it as I know crawling means more independence which is a good thing but kind of sad for a mommy too! I AM pumped about him figuring out how to go from his belly to sitting though. He will be sitting playing happily but then he’ll reach for something that’s too far away so he’ll end up on his belly then he’ll cry wanting to go back to sitting. It’ll be a blessing when he can do this himself!

The most interesting thing in this chapter of the book was about foods. I’m awful when it comes to this whole feeding thing. I just am a perfectionist (shocker) and I want to do the right thing by my baby but it’s difficult when every single source says something different about nutrition. I have decided to give breastmilk up until he’s old enough (1 yr) for cows milk. I’ve also decided to wait on any meat until he’s older, maybe around 9 months depending (got that from Babywise). The rest is kind of hard. The Babywise Blog lady gave her children baby food for a long time to make sure they had the right portions and the proper kind of food throughout the day. I agree that this is the easiest way to make sure he’s getting what he needs but I do also agree with the stuff I’ve read about the importance of finger foods (helps with coordination etc) and foods that require chewing (helps with speech). We’re going grocery shopping tomorrow and Kye’s going to start on Stage 2 foods. This book says he should be on Stage 3 by now but that’s also assuming that the child probably started eating solids before Kye did. Payton, Courtney’s daughter, is two months younger than Kye and she’s at about the same place he is with solids now.

There are a million different kinds of Stage 2 foods so it’ll be interesting to decide which ones to buy! It’ll be interesting tomorrow to try to decide but I am going to get some fresh fruit for Kye to try as well as some of those fruit cups. I’m also going to get more Graduates finger foods and some whole wheat bagels for the freezer. ANY ANY ANY tips on what to feed him at this age or anything anyone knows about nutrition would be awesome help! I’m so clueless which makes me nervous because I don’t want to give him something I shouldn’t and have him choke or something or have an allergic reaction of some kind. But I also want to expose him to a lot of foods so he’ll enjoy different things (unlike his mommy) and all kinds of healthy things too!

I counted creeping as an army crawl type thing…it wasn't crawling but he got where he was headed, but that may not be what creeping is at all! Oh and I meant to tyoe this on your other post but I would sing "I like to eat" to Clayton when he would get fussy at meals too!
