Brittlynn ~ 6 Months Old!

Brittlynn turned 6 months old on June 6th (6/6 and 6 months old…). I had someone who wanted my monthly stickers for Brittlynn but she just found out she’s having a boy so if anyone else would like them I’m still saving them up! Just let me know and they can be yours!!! You can also buy your own set here. I’m using What to Expect the First Year to compare where Brittlynn is in her milestones and development!

At six months old Brittlynn can do all of the things a baby her age should be able to do including:

  • keep head level with body when pulled to sitting
  • say “ah-goo” or similar vowel-consonant combinations

She can do almost all of the things a six month old baby will probably be able to do including:

  • bear some weight on legs when held upright
  • sit without support
  • turn in the direction of a voice

The only thing she doesn’t do is “razz.” I’ve never seen her make a raspberry or bubbles on her lips. I don’t think it’s a problem though? I mean she TALKS. I wonder if I should mention in at the dr?

Can you tell this was a tough one for pics? She kept trying to pull up on the crib. I’m NOT ready for standing up anytime soon child jeez!!!!

Brittlynn can do mostly everything a six month old may possibly be able to do including:

  • stand holding onto someone or something (while holding our hands)
  • object if you try to take something away
  • work to get a toy that’s out of reach
  • pass a cube or another object from one hand to another
  • look for dropped object
  • take with fingers a tiny object and pick it up in a fist
  • babble, combining vowels and consonants such as ga-ga-ga, ba-ba-ba, ma-ma-ma, da-da-da (see it’s not a WORD it’s random babble…haha)

The only thing here that she wasn’t doing yet was feeding herself a cracker or other finger foods but that’s only because I hadn’t started on solids yet 😉

I think this is the first time I’ve ever said this about either of my children but at six months old Brittlynn wasn’t doing any of the things a baby her age may even be able to do (no worries, just wait till NEXT months post haha) including:

  • creep or crawl
  • pull up to standing position from sitting
  • get into a sitting position from stomach
  • pick up a tiny object with any part of thumb and finger
  • say “mama” or “dada” indiscriminately (I mean I like to say “she is asking for YOU!” when she says “dada” but really she just says it allllll the time)

This months chapter talked about the different options for feeding a baby..either using store bought food or baby food. I’m SUPER excited to get to the post about what we decided to do for Brittlynn with solids. And it’s neither of these options 😉

It also talked a lot about babies who still at this age aren’t sleeping through the night. I know this is a common issue for people, but it is baffling for me how mamas are able to function all day when they have babies waking up during the night! Babywise is alllll about sleep and how to get your baby to sleep, and sleep well. I’m SO blessed to have found Babywise and thankful that waking children is never an issue in our home.

I do want to say something here about cry it out actually. I know SO many people who are quick to judge that Babywise promotes cry it out and that I have used that strategy in sleep training my children. In this month’s chapter in What to Expect the First Year IT talks about letting your baby cry to get to sleep in the night. Yes, Brittlynn cried a good bit when I first started working with her on scheduling and sleeping. Yes, it was HARD to hear. Yes, it was exhausting and frustrating. But because I got it out of the way when she was little…she now NEVER cries. Like seriously. Never (at least not sleep/crib related haha). I know everyone has their own opinions and beliefs about it but personally I’d much rather deal with a little baby crying (b/c they cry pretty dang often anyways!) and have them never cry again and sleep solid through the night super young than deal with getting up a bunch of times a night AND having to sleep train an older baby and deal with that crying. It’d be way harder in my opinon to do it that way!

Towards the end of this chapter it discussed ways to stimulate Brittlynn at this age. I NEEDED this. When you have an older child running around I think it’s harder to know what to do with the baby? I feel like all I ever do is carry her around or sit on the floor with her with some toys. Here’s some suggestions of things I can do with Brittlynn and each of them help her develop large motor skills, small motor skills, social skills (my personal favorite!) and intellectual and language skills. I’m a read-write-and recite learner so I’m writing all of these out so I’ll actually remember to do them haha:

  • stand on my lap and bounce
  • pull to sitting and standing
  • sit upright
  • lift on all fours
  • activity boards
  • blocks
  • soft toys
  • real household objects (pots, spoons, etc)
  • balls
  • finger games (clap hands, itsy bitsy spider, etc)
  • practice waving “hi” and “bye”
  • blow kisses
  • show cause and effect (pour water from bowl and explain)
  • explain senses (do you hear the airplane?)
  • introduce concepts (the bear is soft, coffee is hot, etc)
  • describe what objects are for while using them
  • encourage curiosity and creativity, let her learn through experience

It is VERY hard to believe that it has already been six months since I gave birth to Brittlynn. It took our family awhile to adjust to her being part of our lives but we truly couldn’t imagine a life without her in it. She’s REALLY starting to get to a fun age of change and growth and it’s so fun watching her evolve!

Big Brother wanted to get in on the fun!

I think he misses having a mobile over his bed…he is obsessed with hers

Both pulling up 😉

Handsome boy!

You can go back and compare to last month’s post here. And  you can compare with Kye’s post here!

You are such a great Mommy!  Babywise isn't easy but your determination is inspiring and the outcome is obvious in Kye and Brittlynn!  You should teach a Babywise class!Love you and am SO proud of you!Mom xoxo
