When Kye was born I wasn’t sure if I’d be a good mom to a son. I’m a pretty girly-girl. Get dirty? No thanks. Bugs? Ehhh you can have ’em. Rough house? Let’s not mess up my hair ok? You get the picture! I have surprised myself in my ability to relate to a son. I ENJOY building train tracks. I ENJOY making lots of different truck sounds. It’s fun to watch him tackle DADDY (he knows he’s not allowed to try that on me though haha). I know that boys learn differently than girls so I try to let him be wild (within boundaries, of course) and to not press him to talk everything out. I feel like I have a pretty good grip on what it takes, at least up to this point!
One thing I LOVE about having a son is his interest in trucks and cars. When we are in the car we’re always on the hunt for a big semi, a police car, or a tractor. We have a ritual when going over the railroad tracks (when approaching them we say “ready…set…gooooooo!”). We slow down when we pass something “cool” and we always talk about what we see. Our favorite thing though is firetrucks. We pass a fire station on the way to and from school and we like to look and see if the fire trucks are “home” or not. I think fire trucks are just cool. So cool, in fact, that we even did Kye’s 1 year photo shoot at a fire station (remember?)
I really, really love our yearly fire station visit. I think it’s GREAT to get the refresher in fire safety and it’s just FUN to let the kids play and enjoy the fire trucks. It’s kinda like the golf outing…I have SO much fun because I truly enjoy seeing those that I love having fun. Golf makes Zach so happy (and Kye too!) and the fire station makes Kye super pumped 🙂 This year Robyn had a valid excuse not to come (she was mighty, mighty pregnant…) and no one else decided to join in so it was just Crissy and I. Sounds like a small group but we now have SIX kids between us! Plus she brought along another friend’s son so we had 7 in our crew 🙂
We went at 10:45 so I could give Britt her bottle while Fireman Justin did his speech on fire safety
Feeding a baby and taking pics. I know, I’m awesome 😉
Smoke detector talk!
I had a hard time managing two kids, Crissy managed FIVE.
Sam is the friend Crissy brought along. He’s five, I think. I LOVE having a son but I’ve always been kinda nervous about how Kye will be when he’s a legit kid. Boys are pretty annoying. At playgrounds and such they are always SO WILD and often very RUDE. Seeing Sam gave me a LOT of hope. This child is awesome. He is so sweet and loving and thoughtful and well-behaved. I hope that Kye can be a lot like Sam as he gets older. He was precious and added a lot to our fun outing! (Props to his mama Liz for raising him so well!)
He was in HEAVEN!
Kye was very cuddly with Brittlynn, it was sweet
Oh Titus 😉
Every year Fireman Justin dresses up in all of his gear. It’s to show the kids that he’s not scary as often when there is a house fire the kids will hide and won’t come out because they are afraid of the firemen. Kye is def one of those type kids…he did NOT like it when Fireman Justin was all dressed in his stuff!!! He got really close to me and wouldn’t go give him a high five with the other kids!
Laughing 🙂
Kye LOVES his new fireman helmet!
Olive! I love how Kye and Titus are watching her so sweetly
Our whole gang!!!
Next they each got to spray the fire hose. This was Kye’s FAVORITE part for SURE
Gotta wear your helmet 😉
Now he’ll give up the high fives!
The “big” kids!
This was a special treat, Fireman Justin sprayed the BIG hose for us!
And let all the kids climb into the firetruck
Sam has a little sister and REALLY loved on Brittlynn. So sweet.
Future Fireman!
Titus
Fireman Justin turned on the sirens for us!
Brittlynn did awesome! It was PERFECT weather, not too hot at all (especially for JUNE) which made it a lot more enjoyable for us all!
Since Kye’s Woody Party for his birthday he has talked about his next party being Buzz themed. Um, no. I ENJOY party planning but don’t want to do practically the same theme again. After our fun fire truck outing he’s been NON-STOP about firetrucks and when I told him we won’t be doing Buzz and to pick something else, firetruck was the theme he picked. I think it could be super cute so I’m gonna keep reminding him of that and am actually planning to take him up to the fire station again soon for another visit. It’s free, educational, fun and he LOVES it so why not go again?!?! They are all SO sweet up there and said we can come by anytime and see the trucks!
She likes a man in uniform 😉
I’m pretty sure ALL local fire stations offer the fire safety mini-classes. Check it out at your local fire station! Each kid got their own fireman helmet as well as a bag with lots of info on fire safety and fun goodies too (magnets, coloring books, stickers, etc). If you live around here and want to go sometime I’d be MORE than happy to tag along again, just let me know!!!
This was our third year visiting and we plan to for sure continue this tradition every summer. Hopefully Brittlynn will enjoy it as much as Kye and I do! Here’s a look back at our first visit in 2010 (the video I mention in it is Mighty Machines, we did find it and Kye LOVES it!!!). And here’s a look back at last year’s visit. And yes, Fireman Justin did remember us this year!
