Before having Brittlynn I had Kye ALL to myself. While I wouldn’t trade my sweet baby girl for the world…I do have times where I miss those special Mommy/Kye days (this blog post still gets me emotional!!!). I’m super, mega thankful that Zach feels the same way. He, too, thinks one-on-one time with each child is important and valuable. He often suggests taking Kye places just the two of them or offers to have some quality time with Britt so I can go do things with Kye. Right now we don’t really have some organized plan for this. It’s pretty easy with two kids. By me taking Kye somewhere, Zach, by default, has quality time with Brittlynn. I know once the kids outnumber the parents that we will have to be more mindful of this and have to come up with some system to make sure each child gets that quality special time! I’m confident that we’ll figure it out though π
In going through my rough time I had a couple days where I just simply didn’t feel like making lunch for Kye. We rode through the picked up lunch to go (SO not my style!!!!). I’m glad that happened though because if I hadn’t picked up Chick-Fil-A I wouldn’t have seen their sign about the Mother/Son Date “Knight”
They had it on Oct 20th and I reserved our seat for 5:30. I was SO excited!!! As was Kye (heck, the word Chick-Fil-A gets that kid hyped!). After naps we snapped some pictures of me and the kids before we headed to run some errands as a family.
Not too bad of the three of us π
My date! π So handsome!
I try to get as many pictures as I can of Britt solo
Eye color twins!
Bringing his snack for the ride π
With Halloween festivities the following weekend we had to go to …. WALMART. Ugh. I loathe Walmart. Like seriously I avoid it at alllll costs. We took the kids and braved it as a family because we needed to be together to pick out things for our costumes π
Brittlynn has been going through a SUPER fussy stage lately (as you could see in the pumpkin patch post). I expected Walmart to be a nightmare with her and assumed I’d be stuck carrying her the entire time. Um…turns out Brittlynn loves to run errands. She didn’t fuss ONE TIME while we were there. She was the happiest I’d seen her that entire week π I guess I have found ONE positive thing about Walmart! And I’m excited that I have a shopping partner!
Yes. We got two carts. Why not? It made more sense than making Kye walk and they loved looking at each other in them π
A lady LEGIT asked us if they are TWINS?!?! Are you joking?!?!?! I said: “No, he’s three and half and she’s not even one…”
After Walmart Zach and Britt headed home (and had a fun dinner date outside! She LOVED it!) and Kye and I headed to CFA. We were early for our reservation but they let us in. We got treated like royalty! They had table cloths on all the tables and even had a “waitress” seat us in our reserved spot π And look who came to crash the party π
He’s totally waiting for his food!
There were TONS of activities! Including a shield for us to design our family crest
They took our order and brought our food out on plates. So fancy!
They also made Kye a balloon sword (even in pink per his request)
Our placemats had a list of questions to help us start conversation. I thought this was BRILLIANT. Boys can be so tough to have conversations with because they just aren’t chatty like us girls are. I did ask Kye all of the questions but they were def geared towards older boys. He’s also very literal…like when I asked him if he’d rather be able to fly or have super strength he kept saying “Mommy. We can’t fly.” We did see a table with a mom and FIVE sons all of which were in their teens or older. I’m sure she did need to use these questions π
Our table happened to be the Unicorn Table! My favorite animal, duh π
Drawing our family crest
Enjoying our date knight!
They also gave us a free dessert of our choice (we each chose the brownies but saved them for another day as we wanted to go on an ice cream run!)
Gotta be a little crazy right?
We went in the play area for a bit. It was kinda funny because this DAD was there with his kids (I mean I guess CFA can’t kick people out during their events…). He was well tatted up and I noticed that he had two names on the back of his neck. He also had two kids running around. When I said Kye’s name he said “My son’s middle name is Kai too” I totally felt like saying “yeah, I read it on your neck” haha but I held back. It got SO awkward because he kept talking to me and I could tell he was feeling me out to see if I was interested…it was still totally a compliment to be getting hit on but it was SUPER uncomfortable too. I mean I’m on a date with my KID dude for real!!!!
When we left they gave us a goody bag to take home. It had stickers, a cow, a knight, and some coupons in it!
Kye had never heard of a knight before so we talked a lot about them and how they are heroes and the “good guys.” He really liked it! It has also lead me into talking to him about how we have an armor of God around us like the knights wear armor too π
Of course we went by The Mix to finish up our fun night out!
While we were there I got a little emotional. There was a HUGE group of middle school aged kids with their parents in the parking lot celebrating a birthday party or something together. Watching them interact made me sad. All the kids were ALL about their friends. They were texting. On their phones. Flirting. I looked at Kye and how excited he was to be spending time with his mama. These days are fleeting. They are flying by. I totally wish I could stop time and just savor every second of my kids during this brief stage in their lives. It also encouraged me though…seeing those teenage boys at CFA with their mama. They weren’t hanging with friends on a Saturday afternoon, they were happy to be with their mom! My kids can be different than the norm too! We can stay close as they grow older. We can continue to have a close bond. π I’m very confident in that and know that by doing special nights like this one I’m helping shape our future relationship as well!
Enjoying every last bit!
Kye had SO MUCH fun and so did I. I truly did. Not just the kind of “mom fun” where I’m happy because my kid is happy. TRUE fun. Kye is getting old enough where we can talk and have conversations. Laugh together. Enjoy each other on a new level. It was a fabulous event and I can’t wait to attend more like it in the future. I’m thankful to CFA for being a company that IS focused on the family. In our society it’s so rare to find companies who strive to do the Lord’s work and I will always be a proud CFA supporter!!! They even sent us home with a little packet all about tips to inspire and equip me to spend more quality one-on-one time with my sweet boy π
Zach and Britt had a nice night as well and Zach was super pumped to have himself a mini-feast that night for the FSU game. He took such pride working on his ribs for days to make them perfect. So cute!
How do YOU spend quality time with each of your children? And if you have a son what are some fun things you do with him??? I do think Zach and Kye have SO much more in common than Kye and I do so I’m always looking for ways that he and I can connect π

I think that my husband has many more options with our boys than I do…but I still try to have "my" things. For instance, I am the reader of the family and I'm trying to pass that along to our sons. I read with them, let them read to me, and we go to fun events together at our local libraries. I also try to show them that mommy can hang with them too. I'm out there playing goalie, throwing pitches, and practicing free throws. But now I'm going to look into some CFA date nights because that sounded adorable!!
Hi Emily! You just commented on my blog after seeing my comment on Kelly's Korner! I've just started this blogging adventure, and it's been amazing to meet so many like minded Mama's out there. Love your date night post. Too cute. Glad to find another Babywise-supporter and exercise-hater out there! We should chat: optimisticmusings{at}gmail.com
