On March 4th my sweet baby boy turned 6!
It was a school day so his actual birthday was filled with pretty much normal daily activities. I try to keep my birthday traditions with each child SIMPLE. Kye is old enough now where he gets excited about things and it was cute when I tucked him in the night before his birthday because he said “I’m so excited for you guys to come wake me up in the morning!” Here’s the video when we all went to wake him up π I love that he was looking forward to it!
Officially counting his age on TWO HANDS!
He asked to wear his birthday button to school from our trip to Disney last year π
I also really like to have the kids a BIG birthday balloon on their chair for their special day. I really appreciate Zach as he ran out the night before and got the balloon filled for me π For lunch Kye got to have whatever he wanted and he picked for me to make a chicken sandwich, fruit, and cheese-its (I didn’t realize how AWFUL they are for you?!?! I told Kye it was the first and last box we’d be buying. Poor kid!). I also surprised him and heated up some pumpkin muffins I had in the freezer π
Zach was home early from work so we decided to open gifts prior to going out to eat for dinner. This year I struggled with what to get for Kye. Mrs. Charlotte went a little overboard on Christmas so there was seriously nothing left on his wish list and really the kid just didn’t need new junk!
I love used kid’s sales (I guess they are technically called consignment sales) and a couple years ago actually got a set of nice golf clubs for Kye. They’ve been in the attic just waiting and Zach said his current clubs are now too short so it was a great time to give them as a gift!
This is how Tess felt about being stuck in the jumperoo during presents haha
Kye LOVES Imaginext toys. A couple years ago I had some massive coupon and decided to get him started on them. He’d never asked for them and I really hadn’t heard much about them either but they were so cheap (I got a castle for $7 and paid like $3 for each “guy”) that I couldn’t resist. He ended up LOVING the set. Like it’s his favorite toy for sure. Sadly they quit making the castle set. Now it’s all like DC Comic stuff? And Spongebob? Which we aren’t into. I went on a hunt and found all the remaining guys he doesn’t have on clearance directly from Fisher Price. I went ahead and bought them all and will be spreading them out as gifts this year for him. If you have a little boy then Imaginext toys make GREAT presents!
Another brand I LOVE is Bruder. It’s a German company that makes SUPER good quality cars and trucks toys. Kye has the firetruck
from Santa a couple years ago and got the crane
from Santa this year for Christmas. Another kid sale find was a tow truck I scored for only $15 which is a real bargain for this brand! They are pretty large vehicles which make them a little tricky to store but they are really top quality. I know they will be toys that I hold onto for Kye’s son to enjoy some day for sure π
Zach and I both brain stormed gift ideas for Kye and I already had some football pads and a VSU helmet (both, again, from kids sales! I’m telling y’all I rack UP!) so Zach went on a mission and got a special jersey made for Kye. Usually I’m the one behind the gift buying so it was so special and sweet that Zach handled the jersey. I think Zach was more excited about this gift than he ever has been a gift for our children before!
The only present Kye specifically asked for this year was…a garbage truck!
He was so excited!
Zach took the helmet up to VSU and Coach Dean (the head football coach) helped him make it “legit” with numbers and everything on it. How precious and special is that?!?!
We also got him Big Hero 6
and a new tackle dummy
(his other one busted and we knew with the new football gear that he’d want to tackle something!) and I found some sand play set on clearance last summer that I think he’ll enjoy playing with outside with his cars! My dad and Audrey also sent him a karaoke machine. He LOVES it…and Zach loathes it π
Another birthday tradition is getting to choose where you want to go out to eat or what we eat for dinner if we stay home. Kye started talking about his choice well before his actual birthday. He said he wanted to go to a new pizza place in town that has games. It’s a really neat place with TONS of cool stuff everywhere you look. Britt FREAKED OUT when we walked in the door because they have a giant shark hanging down from the ceiling. Once she realized it was all pretend, she was fine! It was a very affordable buffet and as a bonus they gave the kids free tokens for games so we didn’t have to spend money on that. You know I like FREE π
Tess did GREAT eating out…although she didn’t get any pizza π
The tokens only lasted for about 5 games per kid which worked out well since we needed to get back home. What worked out even better is that random people kept handing us their tickets from the games they had been playing. So the kids ended up with hundreds of tickets.
Picking out the prizes was the most fun of all π Doesn’t it always bring back childhood memories? Britt was PUMPED that they had a crocodile!
Pics with the birthday boy!
Whenever someone else is getting their picture taken…Britt suddenly wants hers taken too π
For a birthday cake this year Seth made a great suggestion to me to try making an ice cream sandwich cake. I showed one to Kye from Pinterest and he wanted to give it a try! It was SO cheap. SO easy. And the kids and I LOVED it (Zach didn’t like it too much…he said it needs more chocolate sauce next time). I used this recipe and added a ton of m&ms and oreos π
I thought it was so smart to suggest putting tin foil in the pan to make it and then it made it SUPER simple to lift out of the pan!
Video of us singing happy birthday!
One last birthday tradition is that every year we measure each child and mark their height on the doorframe in our laundry room. The kids enjoy randomly “checking their height” throughout the year as well. It’s crazy to see the HUGE growth Kye had from his 4th birthday to his 5th birthday! He def didn’t grow as much from his 5th to his 6th!
Kye had a really great day and felt very special, which is always my goal for my kids birthdays! We all make a lot of sacrifices for others but shouldn’t everyone be a little spoiled on their birthday? It’s the one day of the year that we get to have it be ALL about US! I don’t go overboard with it, but I want to always make sure that each child truly enjoys their birthday from start to finish! I’d say Kye’s 6th one was a success π
