Kye’s 7th Birthday Letter {From Mommy}

Today I’m sharing a copy of my Happy 7th Birthday letter to my son, Kye. Please enjoy and feel free to share!

Birthday letters are a super special way to give your child a meaningful gift that they can appreciate more and more as time goes on… and express your love for them in words!

Not everybody is great at expressing themselves with words, but sometimes it’s easier to write things down instead of trying to say them. Plus, your child may not remember what you said (even if they appreciated it!) but they can always reread a letter. That’s what makes them such valuable keepsakes!

My birthday letters to my children vary depending on the year, but more or less you’ll find these same elements in all of them:

  • A recap of the year and their achievements, in and out of school
  • My favorites things about them
  • How their relationships with parents, siblings, and friends have grown
  • Of course, lots of love!

On each of my kids’ eighteenth birthdays, I plan on making a book of all the birthday letters their father and I have written to them over the years and giving it to them as a gift!

As they enter adulthood (and possibly go off to college… hopefully not too far away!) I hope those letters can serve as a keepsake of their childhood and a reminder of how much their family loves them!

Below is the letter to my son on his 7th birthday, written by his mama, me! You are more than welcome to use this as inspiration or as a template for your own birthday letter to your son.

Happy 7th Birthday Letter to My Son

Dear Kye,

Each year these letters get tougher and tougher to write as I get more and more emotional over you growing up! I know my job as your mom is to raise you up to be a man. You won’t stay my little boy forever. One day you will leave our house and marry and have a family of your own. My goal as your mom is to prepare you for that day. To help you become a man of God who will lead his family down a path of righteousness. I’m savoring each day I have with you until that time comes and pray that our bond will remain strong throughout all the changes life brings.

This year was a BIG shift in you. You are less and less interested in spending time with Mommy and are more into hanging out with Daddy. I am grateful for this as I see the bond Daddy and Big Papa share and I want you to have that with your dad, and for him to have that with you! I know it’s a natural thing for you to be gravitating towards someone who shares so many common interests with you but it still hurts my heart that there are so many things you enjoy that I’m no longer “part of!” Even our Disney trips I know your favorite memories are the ones spent riding all the fast rides with Daddy! My goal in this coming year is to make sure to focus on our common interests. Even if it’s just getting froyo and talking. I always want you to know I’m here for you and also want you to remember that Mom can be fun too 😉

I truly do cherish all of our talks. You love to make plans just like I do and talking about the future is so fun with you. You remind me SO much of myself and I can really put myself in your shoes as I’ve been there! When you talk in a “grown up” way I remember being a kid and being more interested in the grown up discussions than in playing with the kids my age. It was not a surprise to me at all that you tested into the gifted program this year. I think it’s such a great thing for you as it will help you to think creatively and for the way your brain works to be understood by others. So far you haven’t had a tough time relating to your peers and for that I’m so thankful!

Your teacher this year brags and brags on you which fills my heart with pride. It was a big change starting public school but you’ve really just been such a light to your peers. You lead without being a “know it all” and you are a friend to everyone. My favorite part of the day is when you come running of the bus to meet me on the porch. I love the excitement you have when you see me. I also love, love, love the mornings when I drop you off at school. While the other kids hop out of their cars and race into the building you ALWAYS look back at me and smile and wave. I cherish that moment!!!

Along with your interests in more “boyish” things (sports, fast rides, etc) you have also entered into the silliness stage. I remember being at the park when you were a toddler and seeing the boys that were the age you are now. I remember worrying about this age. The boys always seemed so WILD and unruly. I’m SO thankful that you have an AWESOME balance of silly without the wild and crazy. You will joke around and make things into games and have lots of sound effects for everything but you still are such a rule follower and never cross that line where it’s too silly. I’m not sure how you are on the playground at school but I have a feeling you’re still the kid who tells others not to go up the slide 😉

You impress me so much with your black and white views on right and wrong. You have such a strong faith and stand by your morals. I trust you completely. You know you can come to me (and Daddy too) when you do have times of making poor choices. I appreciate so much your open heart and your quick desire to repent and ask for forgiveness (from us but most importantly from God!). You have your Daddy’s viewpoint on the world along with his good looks! I can’t get over how much you’ve changed from looking like me to looking like him! Even your mannerisms are so Zach. It cracks me UP. I do sometimes see the hints of disrespect in the ways you speak to me and that does concern me as I know it’s something Daddy struggled with in his relationship with his mom. I take it pretty seriously when you speak to me in a disrespectful tone and I’m thankful Daddy does as well and I know it’s something we will continue to work on in the future!

I have been SO proud seeing you grow in your walk with the Lord. I love hearing you and Daddy do your Bible studies at night and I love watching you on the video monitor (yes you are SEVEN and I still peak in from time to time!) as you pour into God’s Word on your own. I love our talks about faith and I especially love seeing you trade in the coloring books and little toys to sit and listen during services. I love hearing your voice as you sing along during worship and I love that your sister is also participating more in services because she looks up to you so much. You are already leading her towards God! I’m so proud to have you set that example for your sisters and I know you are setting it for your peers as well.

I am interested to see what changes this coming year will bring. I keep thinking you will ask to join a sports team of some kind but you continue to say you’d rather spend time with your family than play sports on a regular basis, so we will see! I know you love competition and enjoy practicing every sport at home so I have a feeling the team thing is coming soon. Not that I’m in a super big rush for it or anything 😉 You are very much an intro-vert. While you talk to everyone you meet and enjoy spending time with friends and family…you NEED alone time. When we go run errands or something a couple days in a row right after school you will tell me that you just really need to be by yourself. You crave that quiet, peaceful, solo playtime which I think is wonderful! It’s so important to understand your personal needs and I try to make sure you have that time each day. It would be a little easier if Britt also craved alone time…poor girl would spend every waking second with you if you’d allow it 🙂

You continue to be an amazing big brother. I love the age difference between you and Tess SO MUCH. I tell people all the time that 5 years apart is so awesome. I love that you and I can talk about when Tess was a baby and that you remember it so clearly. It’s precious how you say you miss that stage with her and how you constantly bring up wanting another baby in our home (but you make sure to throw in there that is MUST be a boy this time…if we even mention that it could be another girl you get tears in your eyes haha!). You are going to be one INCREDIBLE Daddy one day! You have such a love for little ones and truly do an amazing job handling two younger sisters. I will warn you that as they get older…it’s not going to get any easier 😉 But you are up for the task (and I promise to make sure you get that alone time…sister free!).

This year was the year that you announced you no longer like kissing us. You and Daddy don’t kiss on the lips anymore, other than a rare occasion. I let you know up front that you would still be kissing Mommy 😉 I birthed you so deal with it ha!!! I’m thankful you don’t put up a fight about it and am thankful you still enjoy cuddling with me before bed each night. I have to tell you to stop reading (#bookworm) but you still like to have me scratch your back and sing to you and I love that time together. Like I tell you every single night…you are SO special to me! You are special because you made me a mommy which is THE best gift of my life!

God abundantly blessed our family when he gave us YOU. You are perfect exactly as you are and I love you no matter what forever and ever and ever. You never have to question my love as it is unwavering. I will always support you and be there for you when you make mistakes along the way. You bring such light and such joy to each day. You are THE first person to hop up to help others and you have such a happy heart about any task. You take your chores SO seriously and you are always looking for a way to earn more money. I can see you being an inventor or entrepreneur one day as you have such creative ideas and don’t hesitate to put them into motion! You inspire me to work harder and to give my ALL into everything I do!
