Family Fun on a Budget!

I know, you’re probably already sick of me talking about how motivated we are to spend smart! But I also hope that our journey to financial freedom can help inspire others to join us! Plus this is what our lives have been about lately and, you know me, I blog about every detail of everything we do haha

I’ve mentioned before that I canceled two trips I was supposed to go on in March. I already blogged about what we did during the first “bonus” weekend here…for the second bonus weekend we tried to get creative and think of fun things to do as a family around the house without spending money. Poor Zach was in a LOT of pain due to his knee injury (dude has got to realize that he’s OLD and quit being a super star with athletic activities haha) so I was pretty much handling things. One of the VERY few downsides of being a stay at home mom is that when the weekend comes…I do NOT want to do the same thing that we do every other day during the week. I gotta have some variety!

It was BAD weather all day so we started off the morning with the kids and Zach building a MASSIVE fort in the living room! Zach is a pro at rigging stuff up and somehow used an umbrella to hold it together?!?!?

Both kids had a BLAST playing together in it!

Once Britt went down for her morning nap Zach went to lay down in our bed and Kye and I made some do-it-yourself fruit snacks! It was a GREAT activity and resulted in a yummy treat for him that wasn’t loaded with sugar and junk 🙂 A win-win for sure! Plus it was SIMPLE to make and required very few ingredients. You can get the recipe on how to make them yourself here!

He was so excited about them and ran into our bedroom to let Zach try one 🙂

He wanted to use the dog bowl from Stevie’s party the night before to eat them out of 🙂

Britt got to eat a couple too after nap and she loved them!

We had a church Easter function the next day so Kye and I also whipped up a big batch of my FAVORITE home made cookie recipe. Seriously, it makes AMAZING sugar cookies!!! I’ve made them for Robyn before and I can’t remember if I have given her the recipe or not so I posted it HERE 🙂

After their afternoon naps I thought it’d be fun to do something different for snack time! I gave each kid a blue piece of construction paper and spread goldfish out on it. Then I put a glob of peanut butter on the end of a pretzel stick and let each of them “go fishing” with the pretzel as their fishing pole! Kye LOVED it and thought it was so, so fun. I had to keep reloading the peanut butter because my kids are addicted to that junk but they had a blast and it was a fun, easy way to have a creative snack!

Savoring the peanut butter haha

Since it was the weekend prior to Easter I had a lot of plastic eggs and thought it would be fun to just let Britt play with them to keep her entertained while I got dinner ready. Turns out even Kye thought they were super fun. Even after Easter was over we still are playing with plastic eggs haha! I put them in a tupperware and let the kids take them in and out and it kept them well entertained. Of course Kye turned it into a game where he’d hide the eggs and tell Britt to find them…hence why we keep finding eggs everywhere…

Once they realized the eggs open up that became a game too…open and shutting the eggs! I figured it’s probably great for Britt to help with her fine motor skills!

Daddy got to rest while Britt kept brining each egg over to show him 😉

It was a very low-key and simple Saturday in our house but we had a GREAT time finding fun new activities to add to our list of things to do! Hopefully some of these will give you ideas for your little ones too. With summer around the corner who doesn’t need some creative ideas???
