This is Kye’s summary from the month of March!
March is Kye’s favorite month because it’s his birth month! He had a blast at his birthday party and enjoyed getting to celebrate with his friends at school. I brought brownies and the class celebrated another student’s birthday as well.
I also had Kye fill out his own thank you cards this year for his birthday presents. I bought these pirate themed fill-in cards and he loved getting to write them all!
One of Kye’s birthday presents wasBig Hero 6
. I heard nothing but good things about the movie and probably would have gone to see it in theaters. If our movie theater prices weren’t crazy ridiculous! We haven’t taken the kids to see a legit movie since Frozen came out and I’m not sure if that’ll be changing anytime soon!
We had a movie night as a family and watched it together. I nursed Tess and then put her to bed and was able to cuddle up with my big kids and hubby to enjoy a great movie! Kye loves it but Britt is OBSESSED with it. She would watch it every single day if we let her! It’s very cute, with very few scary scenes. While it’s not on my Top 10 list for best Disney movies, I really appreciate having a new movie geared more towards boys. Kye loves Frozen but there is NO merchandise for boys based on the movie (which is irritating because they could easily have some Olaf and Sven stuff, right?!?!). He’s kinda growing out of Lightning McQueen and is long over Woody and Buzz so I’m glad I can snatch up the available Baymax stuff for now!
This month Kye’s class had a field trip to our local library. It was during Dr Seuss Week. I was able to go with them and the library did a nice little themed event for the kids. She read several Dr Seuss books and had a themed craft.
Yes, Kye is in kindergarten and he only has 5 kids total in his class. And yes, he’s the ONLY boy! I posted this on Facebook and mentioned the boy-to-girl ratio. My aunt (on my dad’s side) commented and said “Maybe he is taking after his grandfather who loves…books” bahaha I about died! Best comment ever π Anyone who knows my dad knows that yes, he does enjoy books…but that he especially has always enjoyed the ladies π
We had some free time after and were able to look at all the books. It was interesting to me to see the reading levels of the other kids in his class. It’s been SO neat to watch Kye blossom in his love of and ability to read. At this point he was still not super into reading but within a few weeks he just took off! I know boys tend to take longer than girls for things to catch on and when we went on the field trip I felt he was behind the girls, but now he’s for sure caught up to their abilities.
Y’all. I made a total fool of myself in the library. When I was a kid I had a reoccurring nightmare. I have always have VERY vivid, life-like nightmares. I can still to this day remember several of them, even back from childhood. One that I had quite often was about getting locked in a toy store. The store had closed and I was the only one in there. The walls were covered with toys, even on the ceiling. I was walking down the aisles and passed a huge stuffed ape and as I walked by it blinked at me and then jumped down from the shelf and started chasing me (which is when, of course, I’d wake up.). While at the library I looked up and who was staring down at me?!?! THE APE FROM MY DREAMS. Of course I told everyone there about it and of course I took a picture haha. I also think this same ape is one my brother had growing up which makes sense why I dreamed about it!
Something I’ve been eager to start doing with Kye is reading chapter books together. I have loved reading my entire life and really want to pass down that love to my children. I’ve always read with them but last year Kye and I started having a few minutes of solo reading time together. I wanted to read Charlotte’s Web
with him as it’s such a classic and I thought it’d make a good first chapter book!
We started off strong reading it together but then I got to the point in pregnancy when I was pretty miserable and then Tess arrived and basically the book got shelved for awhile. Now that she’s nursing a little quicker in the evenings I have time to be able to tuck Kye in before bed and we’re able to read a couple pages together each night. We were both SO sad when it ended because, omg, it’s a dang SAD book right?!?! We finished it in March and it’s now May and we’ve already finished our second chapter book (Stuart Little
) and are a good ways into our third one (James and the Giant Peach
). We both look so forward to this time together! I also wrote in the front of the book as I’d like to read it with Britt as her first chapter and think it’d be neat to have all the kids names in it and the date when we read it together π
As I mentioned earlier, Kye’s love of reading just really took off this month. He went from not really wanting to read, to always asking if he could be the reader π Britt is so good about being patient and encouraging with him as he enjoys reading to her at bedtime!
For his birthday my dad and step-mom sent Kye a karaoke machine. I did not expect it to be such a hit! The kids love to play music on it and sing along. We were doing our bible time one day when Kye realized our bible came with a cd. He put it in and listened to literally almost the entire bible in one sitting. He followed along in the actual book too! We LOVE the The Big Picture Story Bible
if you’re looking for a good one with kids!
I love the little notes he writes for me…and am especially excited to finally have some hands and fingers! You know those heart shaped o’s are totally due to being in a class of all girls…but I’ll take ’em while I can get ’em π
As a part of our Bible program for the kids at our church they give out Bible Bucks as rewards. The kids earn the bucks by attending classes, bringing their Bibles to class, reciting books of the Bible, reciting memory verses, etc. Kye and Britt pooled their bucks together and Kye was able to “buy” a brand new bike! Zach and I were pretty thrilled about this b/c his other bike is way too small and it saved us from having to buy one π
Mrs. Liz asked Kye for advice to give others about how to save up for the bike and he said that he likes to spend one buck at the general store and save the others! He’s now saving his to help Britt buy her bike next π
Kye and Britt continue to walk that typical sibling line of being best buddies to wanting to kill each other π I think they do best in small doses which makes me a tad nervous for summer! They work well together when given a task so I’m going to just have to plan a lot of activities for them!
This month we worked together to bake some cookies for Britt’s no-more-finger-sucking party π
They are also trustworthy enough now to have picnics on the porch without adult supervision. They LOVE to feel like “big kids” π
They worked hard with Daddy to plant a garden. Crossing fingers we actually grow something this year!
This month we went out for a family dinner to Steak and Shake. Now that Tess doesn’t have an evening cat nap it makes going and doing easier! The kids LOVE getting to go out to eat π
I’m big about age appropriate toys but you can’t always control what others buy as gifts. Someone bought Kye a legit lego set awhile back and he’s not quite at the appropriate age yet for them. He LOVES building them but does still get easily frustrated with it.
I think a disadvantage of living in the same town as so much family is that we tend to take it for granted. Zach and I are trying to work our way through the family and have people over or go visit people more often on a one-on-one basis. When we ALL get together it’s super fun, but it’s not quality time with each person. We invited Zach’s parents over first and I’m SO glad we did. Mr. Rusty got out in the yard and played with the kids. It was precious and meant SO MUCH to Zach and I! The kids loved playing with him too π
The joke about the weather around here is that we only have two seasons in Valdosta: summer and winter. The month of March is when we get our mega-short spring. We get a few nice days before it becomes torturously hot. We tried to play outside as much as possible!
Whew…gives mama a heart attack seeing him that high!
Kye is getting more and more interested in sports (ugh the dreaded days of sports teams are probably coming haha!). He and Zach love to play baseball in the backyard…but of course they love throwing the football the most!
If he does end up playing football you know this is going in the senior yearbook π
One happy daddy!
Britt is the cheerleader π
More About Kye This Month:
- Kye came home upset on his birthday after school. He had asked me if he could wear his Disney Birthday Button to school that day. I was mildly nervous about teasing, but if he wanted to wear it, why not? I was surprised to find out that he did get teased that day…but not for the button. He told me a girl in another class saw the button and saw his name written on it and said “oh is your name PIE?!?!” And that all the kids kept laughing and calling him Pie. Which I mean you know when you name your kids you always try to think up all the ways they could get teased with that name. I guess Pie is a pretty easy one π We talked about how to handle stuff like that and he said he wanted to pray for the girl because she was not nice for teasing him.
- Tess got her first two teeth in and Kye said “she looks like Mater with those teeth!”
- Kye has started living up to the whole boys-will-eat-you-out-of-house-and-home reputation. He eats and eats and eats! He will ask for more and also ask if he can eat ours if we don’t finish
- Along with a bigger appetite he also is MUCH more adventurous with his eating. He’s enjoying a more variety of foods and isn’t afraid to try things. This is such a great thing for ME to see happen because it’s a reminder to myself to just keep having Britt try things and she will eventually come around!
- Kye decided that he’s saving up his bookmark sale money to buy the house next door to us that’s for sale so he can live by us forever π He told me he has $22 and asked if that’s enough to get it.
- Now that Kye is reading so well he’s asking a LOT more questions. I always heard the “why” stage is around 3ish but Kye is much more inquisitive now than he’s ever been in the past
- We have been talking about summer camps and especially golf camp and Kye doesn’t want to do it. He said he wanted to just stay at home and spend time with his family all summer!
- He loves playing football and seems to have a good arm
- He wrote me a card that says “Mom you are GOLD” π
Videos:
He’s only been 6 for 1 month but so far it only continues to be just as awesome of an age as 5 was π Kye is truly such a joy each and every day and is an amazing big brother and wonderful son!
