This is a letter to my son on his 6th birthday from his proud mama. I love writing these yearly letters for each of my children on their birthdays and look forward to the day when I bind them all into a book for them when they turn 18!
It will be a special milestone birthday present that I hope they will enjoy reading and looking back on all of our memories together over the years.
My dear sweet Spear,
This has been such a BIG and exciting year for you! The shift from 5 to 6 is such a “big boy” change and I have really seen the ways in which you’ve been growing, maturing, and your unique personality continues to blossom.
This was my favorite Christmas with you yet (although I will say that first Christmas with you HOME as a tiny little newborn was pretty darn special too!). You really understand the excitement of the holiday season and were so hands-on in every aspect of it.
One of the best moments for me was when you wanted to help me cut out the Christmas cookies. It was such a special moment for me and a memory I will cherish forever. Your excitement and joy made a usually frustrating task so FUN.
Since you were itty bitty you have struggled with drainage issues. I feel like you ALWAYS have a running nose and even when you were just two years old your speech helper pointed out how congested you sounded.
It took a LOT of pushing but I finally was able to get you seen by a dr who took my concerns seriously.
We had both your tonsils and adenoids taken out as well as had tubes put in your ears (you had hearing loss in your left ear!). You were SO tough for the entire procedure as well as the recovery. Day of you were asking to eat biscuits!
You bounced back quick and, most importantly, have had awesome results. Your voice is so much clearer and you can finally HEAR!
Along with medical talk you also were diagnosed with ADHD this year. I’m so thankful God put you in the class you were in for Pre-K as your teacher is a dear friend to me and she was instrumental in helping diagnosis.
I am a big believer in knowledge being power and going forward with a diagnosis, even though you’re a bit younger than the typical age, has been so great for YOU.
The ADHD medicine journey has been relatively smooth and it’s truly allowed you to be your best self. It simply helps slow down your “Sonic Speed” brain enough for you to think through your decision-making. It’s helping you be less impulsive and able to better contemplate consequences.
You don’t have what many would call “typical” ADHD symptoms in many ways. You are BUSY but not overly wild if that makes sense.
You are also SOOOO sweet that I think you could have easily fallen through the cracks had it not been for your great teacher!
Of all my kids you are the most affectionate towards Mommy. You LOVE giving “Mommy kisses” and love to snuggle, cuddle and be held by me.
You will have a hard time going down to bed for the night if anyone else has to tuck you in. You always want Mommy to sing your special song to you (“A Thousand Years”).
I will be shocked if your love language doesn’t end up being physical touch as anytime we’re at church or watching a movie or even just eating dinner…you WILL find a way to climb up into my lap! I love your sweet kisses and soft hands and squeeze-tight snuggles.
You are not only a sweetie with Mommy but you are also so kind to everyone you meet. You know how to “work” your siblings – constantly jumping from one to the next, claiming they are your current “favorite.” You also make lots of friends at school.
One little boy in your class this year didn’t speak English but that didn’t stop you one bit from becoming best friends. Your loving spirit shines bright and draws others to you.
I love hearing about the fun things you do with new friends as we share our days around the dinner table at night. I pray this gift and talent of your sensitive soul towards others will open doors for you to help bring others to the Lord!
For our big family trip this year we went on a Disney Cruise. Originally it was supposed to just be Mommy and the girls back in 2020 but I am so glad everything worked out the way it did (aside from the whole world-shutting-down-thing of course) because it meant we got to have the experience as a family and you LOVED IT SO MUCH.
You had a blast in the kids club, loved playing in the Toy Story themed splash pad area, and loved the shows and themed dinners. But my favorite memory of you from the trip is how much you enjoyed breakfast each morning in our room.
You got to order room service and they delivered it to the room and you set up a whole spread on the veranda while you watched Disney movies and dined. You were in Heaven!
It’s so interesting raising my last baby as so many of your special firsts are my emotional lasts as a mama. I attended my last Muffins with Mom event with you and it was so special with all the cute crafts you made and getting to spend the time with you.
It is a special bond we share not just as Mother and Son but with you being my last baby. I get to fully appreciate you in a way I wasn’t able to fully comprehend with your siblings.
I know how fast time goes. I’ve seen how quickly it passes, how quickly little boy Kye is now a teen. I know these days with you will continue to fly by so I’m mindful to soak it all in!
Sometimes I find myself feeling a bit guilty that you’ll never be a big brother but I know that you’re also the perfect end note to my time of having little ones and the wonderful traits that would make you a great older brother will also be the ones that make you a great father someday!
You aren’t just sweet with a kind heart, you are also so smart and so talented. Your brain works in such a unique way and you think a lot more like Daddy does. You can figure things out and understand how things work. You pick up how to do things so quickly. You don’t hesitate.
You take risks and jump in and learn as you go! Mistakes don’t phase you or deter you. You’re more “common sense” smart while also still pick up all the academic side of things in school.
You are also such a talented artist. You love drawing and creating and if I had to predict a future career path for you I could see you being an engineer or an architect or a contractor.
Something that combines your love for construction with your creative talents and abilities.
One thing is for sure, you will have to work outdoors. You LIVE outside. This year we did see you start to develop a love for LEGO and it’s the first thing you’ve really enjoyed and have been drawn to that is indoors.
LEGO building will keep your attention and have a laser focus for you. Kye always wanted to follow the exact instructions on his sets…but not you! You use your sets to be creative and come up with all sorts of neat things. You show it to me, then tear it up to start again.
When outside you also can be found making creations…or taking apart Daddy’s tools. You never say “I’m bored.” Life is one big adventure for you!
You are such a perfect blend of “all boy” yet still enjoy doing things with us girls too. I think a lot of the credit goes to having two older sisters! You’ll be an awesome husband and daddy one day – no doubt!
Disney is so fun with you. You love meeting characters and browsing all the shops just as much, if not more than, you enjoy riding the rides. You never complain about any long waits and are super easy going with whatever we’re doing. You are THE most easy-to-please kid!
This has been a big year for transitions for you. Moving to kindergarten but also moving houses. The building process was something you enjoyed so much. All the dirt piles were a dream come true for you!
With this move we really had you in the forefront of our minds. You are a kid who needs room and space to explore. The woods will be such a perfect place for you to grow up and we’re thankful for the opportunity to raise you in a more slow-paced way.
You are your own person and I love how much time you’ve been able to spend in this last year finding new interest after new interest in our new property.
I know the sports days will likely arrive in a few short years (or sooner!) but for now I’m enjoying his little bit of time where you are able to freely roam and spend you after school time with no structure or pressure!
As time passes your adoption journey has been something that is talked about less and less in regular conversation. You love hearing your birth story and often ask to watch the video Mama E took of her tummy when you were inside it!
I pray that you always know she loves you and that we love you. You are fully ours just as you are fully hers. You are just covered with love from so many people, but most importantly from God.
Whenever I have doubts about faith I think of you and your journey of our family and I’m reminded that God did that. He brought us you and you are the last piece of our family puzzle. I can’t fathom our family without you in it!

I am so proud and blessed to be your Mommy. This past year was one of such growth and change and it makes me excited to see what lies ahead for you. Whatever happens in life, whatever challenges you face I hope you know that I am always, always here with you!
You’ve always got me – for 1,000 years and 1,000 more. My son. My baby boy. Being your mama is my best gift.
I love you forever and ever my darling boy and will always be your biggest fan. You have my heart every single day sweet boy. Happy Birthday to my SIX year old!
Love, Mommy
