When we have babies we are hardcore about not knowing the sex until they are born. I love almost every element of the surprise…except when it comes to the nursery. With Kye we did a neutral nursery but Zach had so many rules that it ended up being more boyish than girlish.
This time around I didn’t want to risk it. I knew Zach would have “rules” again and we’d end up with a boyish nursery, again. So we painted the room a color that we knew would work for either sex (if Britt had been a boy we were going to do a shark theme) and then waited until the baby was born to decorate.
While I was pregnant I picked out TONS of ideas of things I would do if Blitzen were a girl or a boy so it made the whole thing easier once she arrived. I already knew I wanted her chair, mobile, etc. Even though I had a lot of the choices ready to order, it was still a HUGE pain to be worrying about decorating her room when she was a newborn. I don’t really want to go through that again!
I have a sweet friend, Brandi, who is super creative and does lots of design type work. I got her involved and she ended up making Britt’s bedding, lamp shade, and curtain set for us.
She has great taste and it was nice to have someone to bounce ideas off of and to help me come up with things! I wanted a mermaid-themed room but didn’t want it to be cheesy and too cluttered looking (if you can’t tell by now I’m super simple with my decorating! Less it more!).
I wanted it to feel beachy and girly but not overly girly either. It took me a LONG time to get everything I wanted and I could still add a few more touches here and there probably.
We are thinking about Brittlynn staying in this room until baby #4 comes (originally she’d be moving to Kye’s room when #3 arrives) partially because I just ADORE this color and think everything came together so perfectly that I don’t want to change it!
I even thought about going ahead and buying more of this flowered fabric to get a bed skirt and pillows made for her big girl bed, I love it that much!
Brandi did an AMAZING job and I HIGHLY recommend getting in touch with her for any home design needs (she does photography too…the girl is SO naturally talented!). I loved the experience of having someone make things for us. She was able to bring my ideas to life!
We are actually thinking for baby #3 we might have the ultrasound tech person write down the sex and then give it to someone so they can COMPLETELY decorate the nursery. No one else will know the sex but them and we will keep the nursery door locked at all times. We would pick out things for a boy and a girl and just have them order it all so we’d have no idea.
Wouldn’t that be awesome to bring the baby home from the hospital and have a big room reveal?!?! It would def take a lot of stress off of me!!!
View of her room when you first walk in (Love that Brandi did black out curtains!)
I hunted for a clock for her room and ended up finding this one on Etsy and they personalized it to match her room and it was only $13! Such a steal! We hung it above her doorway
I love all the splashes of pink!
I also had this board made for her from Etsy…it’s magnetic. I think it turned out cute but it was much smaller than I had envisioned, and pretty pricy. Next time we’ll make one ourselves 😉
The lamp was in Kye’s room and Brandi just made a cover for the shade. The picture frame and mirror are from Hobby Lobby and Mom bought Brittlynn the little angel bank while we were in the hospital (can I just add that I already miss her being this little!!!)!
I saw a chair similar to this FOREVER ago but it was a corner chair and I loved it. I went to order it after she was born and it turned out it was kids sized. Boo. I found this one from Target online and have been VERY impressed by it.
This junk is SOLID and super good quality. I’m hoping we can incorporate it into all of her future bedrooms as well. I love the Barbie Doll pink color 🙂 The B I got from Hobby Lobby and the mermaid is a BlaBla doll.
I put a little picture of her on the shelf with another “B” (both also Hobby Lobby) and the bear bank was mine as a baby. I need to get some other things for the shelves but I just don’t like clutter so I haven’t stumbled across the perfect thing yet!
Closer view of the chair
The playmat is now in her pack and play which is in the dining room 🙂
Blessing Ring from my baby shower, a lot of the colors helped inspire this space!
Since we’ve always been happy with Kye’s closet, I wanted to basically do the same thing in hers. We even bought the same book shelf from Ikea 🙂 I like that the fabric drawers help to bring out more of the colors from the room!
Does she have enough clothing?!?!
Since we don’t use bumpers (PLEASE don’t use a bumper in your baby’s crib either…see more here) we thought this teething prevention strip at the top of the crib would add some style to it!
I think it turned out ADORABLE!!!
Obviously, the pillow doesn’t stay in there either but I’m thankful to Brandi for making it for us! She covered an old pillow we had with the material to match the room. We used a corner shelf to rig up the video monitor camera.
You can also see how our crib has a fold down side. I LOVE IT. While the dressers will have to be replaced with the next baby, I hope we can continue to use this crib forever. I adore it!
Mobile was specially made from Etsy and I bought the “You are my Sunshine” pictures from there as well (and had them personalized using the colors from her room). The frames are from Hobby Lobby and Zach spray painted them to match.
We used all of this same furniture for Kye. I really, really fell in love with the entire set and we spent a lot of money on it as we planned for it to last for all of our babies. Like it cost as much for Kye’s big boy set as it did for this set!!! We have been SO disappointed with it. I love the crib but the dressers are horrible.
The company spray painted the hinges of the drawers so they stick constantly and it’s such a pain to open and close them. I pitched a fit over it and they sent me a new changing table dresser (the original one is in the guest room).
Then it happened again and they sent us another one. And again. This last time it took months and it was right around when I was due to have Britt. We went through quite a battle and when the thing finally arrived it was in worse shape than the one we already had!
It was cracked in the front and everything!!! SO upset. Zach tried and tried to get a hold of someone and now they just quite answering our calls. We’re beyond disappointed and will have to buy new dressers for baby #3. I refuse to buy new ones right now so we’ll just deal with it until Britt grows out of this furniture!
The lamp we’ve had forever from Ikea. The changing table pad is the same one we used with Kye but I bought the cover from Land of Nod (Diaper changing covers are beyond expensive. It shocked me!!!)
This mermaid is my favorite thing about the room. I found this awesome artist through Etsy and she designed this mermaid using our color scheme specifically for Brittlynn and she loved the end result so much that she’s now selling prints of them!
It’s a large, poster size and I bought a wood frame from Hobby Lobby and Zach spray painted it 🙂 I LOVE how it turned out and it’s a BIG reason why I just want to keep Brittlynn in this room until baby #4. I can’t imagine not using this picture in her room forever 🙂
Only one more house post left! I’m SO happy with how wonderfully Brittlynn’s nursery turned out. I like it a lot better than Kye’s as it’s not gender neutral like his was (although the modern animal decals in his were pretty awesome).
If you would like to contact Brandi just let me know! Also I do have all the sellers I have used from Etsy saved, but I didn’t take the time to link up to all of them so just let me know too if you are interested in looking at their stores 🙂
I love that Britt’s room is girly but not frilly…I’m not really a frilly type of mom (if you hadn’t already noticed that!). Zach was super unsure about the fabrics. I made a board on pinterest with ALL the fabrics I liked (you can see it here) and he only liked seven of them (here) haha.
I actually ended up finding the fabric while in the hospital. I couldn’t ever find anything for a girl prior to her being born. I was so frustrated by it that I was actually HOPING for a boy as I knew what we wanted for him (this awesome squid fabric…we were really pumped about it!).
I still adore this fabric and will probably use it if the next one is a boy 😉 I’m glad I ended up finding the fabric I did and once it was done even Zach liked the fabrics together!!! Thank you again to Brandi for all of her help making our little girl’s nursery everything we wanted 🙂

I was wondering if you would do a shark them for baby 3 or 4 if it is a boy
My daughter loves mermaids! She would love that picture!
